I recently ordered a book from a Dutch online seller that I first discovered in college: Ayako Miyawaki: The Art of Japanese Applique. The term refers to the technique of sewing one fabric on top of the surface of another. Sounds simple — she did it to ecstatic results, working with everyday used materials like worn clothing or rags. Above is “Onion Cut in Two” from 1965.
